What is mental health?
It is best thought of as a way a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors affect their life. Mental health is a spectrum. In the same way people experience physical health as a continuum from well to ill, every individual has a mental health experience. Mental health changes throughout people's lives based on biological and environmental factors. Many people enjoy mental wellness meaning they have a positive regard for themselves, enjoy positive relationships with those important to them and generally are resilient when faced with challenges.
What is a mental illness?
A mental illness is a condition that impacts a person's thinking that can affect their emotions and moods; where it will interfere with their daily functioning at places like home and/or school.
How can parents support children's mental health?
Parents can nurture a child's mental health by building a close relationship with them, providing structure and boundaries, fostering independence, encouraging social connections, teaching healthy habits and modeling positive behavior.
What is the role of parents in promoting mental health?
As parents, you are your child’s first teacher and you play a huge role in supporting your child's mental well-being. Nurturing and loving care helps build a strong foundation, which allows your child to develop the social and emotional skills they need to lead a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.
